Card weaving is an ancient weaving technique, remarkable for the fact that its basic tools have remained the same for at least 2,500 years.

It is a method that combines the warp and the weft through the use of tablets / cards. The tablets function as the shafts in the loom. It is a particularly interesting technique due to its simultaneous simplicity and complexity.

In Greece, the most common application of the technique was for the weaving of the male garter, as well as for the creation of decorative bands for traditional costumes and mostly overcoats.

In this workshop, Despina Pantazopoulou, on the occasion of her work presented at the Benaki Museum within the framework of the exhibition “Art in gold. Jewellery in Hellenistic times”, will show us how to weave using fine metal wires instead of threads. The use of fine metal wires, such as copper, is adding a new dimension to the traditional technique, combining jewellery with the art of weaving.

Card weaving is the outcome of repetitive gestures and continuous practice. By mastering this skill, methods and aesthetics that were not expected might come up.

Making the most of the time on our hands, we will activate our abilities to think and act and, thus, become inventive, ingenious and versatile – both ourselves and our work.
